Stress testing in software testing is performed to attain the software’s survival rates, stability, and strength. As its name suggests, it is used for testing purposes while building software. It is performed to understand the capacity and stability of the product or the software built. In this, testing is done rigorously so that the robustness of the product can be determined. The software is tested beyond its capacity and survival points to determine its strength.

Stress testing in software testing is also called “endurance testing”. It is usually performed on critical software and is prone to high-risk errors. It is used to determine when the software and the project built will break down. Although stress testing is more applicable to risky software, it can be performed on other software too. It also checks the error handling mechanism of the software developed. 

Why is Stress Testing in Software Testing Important?

Now, let us understand the reasons for performing stress testing. The reasons are:

  • During certain times of the year, some festive times, most of the sites and shopping blogs announce sales on their brand. This leads to a sudden increase in the traffic to the website. When stress testing is performed, the solutions to handle such abnormalities in the traffic can be attained. 
  • It determines the strength and error-free mechanism of the system. It also displays an accurate message when there is a problem out of error in the system. 
  • Stress testing gives an insight into the extreme situations that a system or project might encounter. Hence, it is also called “endurance testing” to understand the system’s breaking point and enduring capability.

Software testing is performed to confirm and evaluate the performance of the software so that it is ensured that the software does all the functionality that it claims to do. It is also used to solve bugs and improve the system’s functionality at different stages of its construction. It has numerous types. Some of its types are:

  1. Performance testing
  2. RPA testing
  3. Regression testing
  4. Scrum testing
  5. Risk-based testing
  6. Integration testing
  7. Unit testing and the list goes on.

Types of Stress Testing

Software Testing Examples

  1. Integration testing: The functionality of the integration testing is to ensure that the different modules of the system of software interact with each other and work according to the tested test cases and design system.
  2. Unit testing: The functionality of unit testing is to ensure different functions in a code run accurately in isolation. In this, these functions can run together with the other code modules, or they can also run separately. This sort of testing requires a lot of coding knowledge. It is also believed that this type of testing is the fastest and easiest.
  3. Acceptance testing: A software or a project is built on the demand of the customer or to solve a problem. The acceptance testing is performed to develop confidence in different parts of the system. The software is tested mainly by the users and the customers to ensure that it performs all the applications that it claims to perform. It also checks its usage and deployment. Its examples are alpha testing and beta testing.
  4. System testing: The system’s behavior also plays a crucial role in determining the system’s functionality. So this sort of testing checks the behaviour of the system. It also creates an environment that is very similar to its production environment. 

Types of Stress Testing

There are five types of stress testing. They are described below:

  1. Application stress testing: This stress testing is to solve the issues related to network and data loading and data blockage. It also finds the bottlenecks related to the constructed software or project.
  2. Distributed stress testing: It is used in the client-server model machines. It keeps track of the status and works done by the client. A heartbeat signal is sent to the server in a client-server model that illustrates the client’s presence. If the server stops receiving the heartbeat signals from the client, it performs the testing further to debug the client-side machine in detail.
  3. Exploratory stress testing: These tests the system or software built with the least expected scenarios and situations. If an unexpected situation arises out of nowhere, it is prepared for it. These least expected situations could arise when a large number of users had logged in at the same time creating huge traffic or when a virus scanner has started at all the parts performing the scanning simultaneously. 
  4. Systemic stress testing: This testing is integrated. It is performed on a server where multiple machines are running parallelly. Such testing aims to test the software or the project built in a situation where one application’s data blocks the other application.
  5. Transactional stress testing: This type of stress testing is performed to optimize the systems and for fine-tuning. It takes place when two or more transactions occur between two different applications.

Stress testing in software testing is crucial testing that needs to be performed to illustrate the software’s endurance, strength, robustness, and reliability. It is unique testing as it does not fix or find bugs in the software but tests it over the edge to know what causes its breaking point and how it can be improved further.
