When is a custom LMS the right decision?

Most organisations should not build a Learning Management System. If the requirement is to publish courses, enrol learners, record completion and run quizzes, Moodle, Canvas, Open edX or a commercial product will do it sooner and cost less to own. We say that plainly, because the fastest way to waste a year is to rebuild features that already exist in a mature platform.

Custom development earns its place at the point where the platform starts to dictate your business rather than serve it. That usually shows up as a specific, repeated cost: an approval chain that has to be tracked in a spreadsheet beside the LMS, a certification rule the platform cannot express, a commercial model the licensing does not allow, or an integration that has to be re-run manually every week. How do we handle standards, accessibility and scale?

Three things separate a learning platform that survives procurement from one that does not: it plays other people's content correctly, it can be used by everyone, and it stays up on the day the deadline lands. Do you support SCORM, xAPI and LTI?

Yes. We implement SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 runtimes so packaged courseware reports completion, score and suspend data correctly, and xAPI so richer statements can be written to a Learning Record Store for analysis beyond pass or fail. cmi5 is supported where modern packaging is required. For external tools we implement LTI 1.3 Advantage, including Names and Role Provisioning Services, Assignment and Grade Services, and Deep Linking, so third-party content launches with the right roster and returns grades.

Does an LMS need to meet accessibility standards?

In practice, yes. Education and workplace training software is routinely bought against WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and United States federal procurement under Section 508 is aligned to WCAG 2.0 Level AA. Many tenders also ask for a VPAT or accessibility conformance report. We design to WCAG 2.1 AA — keyboard operability, focus management, semantic structure, captions, colour contrast and screen-reader labelling — and verify with assistive technology as well as automated scanning, because automated checks only catch part of the picture.

How do you handle enrolment peaks and scale?

Learning platforms have unusually spiky demand: a compliance deadline or term start can drive many times the daily baseline within an hour. We model that peak explicitly, then design for it with read replicas or caching for catalogue and progress reads, queued processing for enrolment, certificate generation and reporting jobs, and a content delivery network with adaptive streaming for media.
